USF sophomore Anthony Collins has been named to the 2013 Bob Cousy Collegiate Point Guard of the Year Award Watch List, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced Thursday. Out of the 85 candidates, 18 are sophomores and 22 are underclassmen.
Collins currently ranks fifth nationally in assists per game (7.9) and he’s 20th in assist-to-turnover ratio at 3.24. The sophomore has 62 assists through eight games this season and is averaging 10.3 points heading into Friday’s 7 p.m. home game against Bowling Green. The Houston native is on pace to post 232 assists through 30 games, which would set a new USF single-season record. He has recorded double-digit assists five times in his career, including in three-straight games this season where he dished out 12 (Western Michigan), 10 (Bradley) and 10 (Georgia).
The Cousy watch list will be narrowed down to 20 by Jan. 1, 10 a month later and the final five candidates will be announced in the beginning of March. A premiere selection committee has been assembled to review the final five candidates for the award and the winner will be presented during the Hall of Fame’s Class Announcement on Championship Monday during Final Four weekend in Atlanta.
