The University of South Florida football program added two junior college transfers on Wednesday, head coach Willie Taggart has announced. Defensive back Torrel Saffold and linebacker Rahmon Swain were teammates at Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kan. before signing with USF. Both are expected to enroll for the spring semester and will have two years of eligibility starting in 2013.
Saffold, a 5-11, 180-pounder out of Kansas City, Kan. (Sumner Academy), played in 20 games over his two seasons at Butler C.C. As a sophomore in 2012, he registered 52 tackles, 2.5 TFL, four INTs, 14 PBU and a fumble recovery in 12 games to earn honorable mention all-conference honors. Saffold started his career by making 16 tackles in eight games as a freshman in 2011. He was a first-team all-Kansas City league honoree in his final prep season at Sumner Academy.
A 6-0, 216-pounder from Lithonia, Ga. (Martin Luther King HS), Swain posted 139 tackles, 7.5 sacks, 14.5 TFL, five forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries in 21 games during his two seasons at Butler CC. He notched 83 tackles, 4.5 sacks, eight TFL, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries in 12 games during 2012, while helping Butler to an 11-1 record and a berth in the NJCAA National Championship game. His 83 total tackles tied for 25th nationally and earned him honorable mention all-conference honors. As a freshman in 2011, Swain tallied 56 tackles, three sacks, 6.5 TFL and two forced fumbles in nine games. He was a four-year starter at Martin Luther King HS and led the team in tackles in his junior and senior seasons.
