Former Clemson head coach Tommy Bowden, a regular weekly guest of The Sports Page with Tom Jones and Rick Stroud, was asked on 620 WDAE if he was interested in the vacant head coaching position at the University Of South Florida.  While Bowden did not give a specific yes or no, the former head coach did allude that the USF head coaching position is a position to be desired.

“Being associated with Florida State for so long, when Central Florida and South Florida started their programs I thought both of them has the potential to be really solid programs” said Bowden.   “Both are good jobs and have an option to be really successful.”

Even when asked again in the interview, Bowden refused to give a solid yes or no if he’d be interested in the position.

“I’ve always felt like that job (USF) you could be successful.  They got a lot to offer” said Bowden.  “I’ll do like most politicians and avoid the answer.”

Bowden went on to say that the instability in the Big East Conference with multiple teams leaving over the next couple of years will not prevent USF from finding their new head coach.

“The fact that the Big East is struggling with an identity losing members, that’s a problem for the school and the conference.  It’s not a problem from attracting a good coach” said Bowden.  “For the school it’s not real good, but as far as attracting a coach there are a lot of pluses.”

Skip Holtz was fired from the position on Sunday after three seasons at the helm.
