The USF Bulls men's soccer team edged FGCU in penalty kicks to propel the team to the second round of the NCAA tournament. They'll host the Conference USA champion Tulsa Golden Hurricane (13-5-1) on Sunday, Nov. 18, at Corbett Stadium.
It wasn't easy as the Bulls used up all of regulation and then a perfect 5-for-5 performance in penalty kicks to survive against Florida Gulf Coast University on Thursday night. Leston Paul, Kevin Olali, Lucas Baldin, Gerardo Hernandez and Ashani Fairclough were the Bulls who knocked in their penalty kicks to give the team a 5-3 advantage that sent them to the next round.
"We knew for sure all of our players were going to score. That’s how confident we were going in," Paul, senior Bulls midfielder, said, according to Tom Zebold of GoUSFBulls.com.
Tulsa, like FGCU, had a much better record throughout the 2012 season but is playing against an inspired USF team.
Earlier in the season the Bulls knocked off the talented Golden Hurricane 2-1 in Oklahoma. Tulsa earned a first-round bye thanks to winning their conference, meaning they will play their first tournament game at Corbett Stadium this Sunday.
