Former Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Johnny Damon tells the New York Daily News that he would consider a return to the New York Yankees if they called.  Damon, 39, hasn’t officially retired from MLB and still believes he can be a valuable piece to a major league organization.

Damon telling Mark Feinsand of NYDN:

“I can still hit," Damon said. "I still know I'm better than 70-80 percent of the guys out there. I know if I played every day, I'd be really good."

Damon also mentioned he was still bitter about how he departed from Tampa Bay.  The Rays opting to sign Luke Scott in the 2012 MLB offseason instead of Damon, who eventually signed with the Indians.  "Cleveland was just a weird situation; I could never get in a groove," Damon told the Daily News.

Damon said of the Rays “I guess if you have a bad year and get hurt, you get re-signed," said Damon, still clearly stung by his departure two years ago. "I had a good year there and they didn't want me back.”

The Yankees are in need of an outfielder in the short term as Curtis Granderson suffered a fractured forearm in Sunday’s spring training game.
