Tampa Bay Rowdies press release -- Tampa Bay midfielder Raphael Cox has been rewarded for his midfield display as the Rowdies took an early lead in the North American Soccer League standings by winning the NASL Player of the Week award.
Left-sided midfielder Raphael Cox helped orchestrate the spoiling of the Toyota Field grand opening party in San Antonio in front of a sell-out crowd of 8,177 in a 2-0 win for the visitors. The reigning Soccer Bowl champions recorded their first win of the 2013 Spring Season, adding to a home draw in the season opener.
Following the opening goal of the game in minute 12, Cox continued his strong play helping the Rowdies maintain possession and create several more scoring opportunities.
“We are delighted that Raphael has been recognized in this manner. He has proven to be very capable and versatile for us since joining the organization, displaying a fantastic attitude and dedication to his game.” said Rowdies coach Ricky Hill.
Cox said "It's an honor to be selected for my first POW award. Our team has been putting in a lot of hard work and it’s great to see it pay off. I would like to thank my coaching staff and teammates for putting me in the position to win this award."
San Antonio, which had to play on a high school football stadium the past two seasons complete with artificial turf and all the yard-line markings, christened its soccer-specific facility Saturday night against the Rowdies.
Tampa Bay ruined the festivities, though. New acquisitions Amani Walker and Georgi Hristov scored as the Rowdies picked up their first win of the year 2-0.
"We were determined to come here and, without being disrespectful, spoil the party," said Rowdies head coach Ricky Hill.
Walker's goal came off a Luke Mulholland corner kick in the 12th minute. As San Antonio pressed early in the second half Hristov was tackled in the penalty box on the counterattack and converted the free kick in the 55th.
Then it was Andrew Fontein taking over in goal.
Next up is a home game against Atlanta on Saturday, April 20 at 7:30 p.m. The Rowdies have four points through two games putting them tied for first with Edmonton.
The Scorpions were last year's top seed in the playoffs and in one game in Texas humiliated Tampa Bay with eight goals.
Again the Rowdies were without top forward Mike Ambersley and big man Carl Cort, though both are expected to return soon.
