Following Monday's 6-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Tampa Bay Rays made four more moves to reduce their roster.
Catcher Chris Gimenez was optioned to Triple-A Durham, while DH Shelley Duncan, INF Mike Fontenot, and OF Jason Bourgeois were reassigned to minor-league camp.
Gimenez had the best spring offensively of any catcher in camp, hitting .368 / .390 / .526 with a homer and five RBI, while Duncan led the team with five home runs in the Grapefruit League. Bourgeois hit .267 / .371 / .300 with two RBI and four stolen bases without being caught. Fontenot hit just .171 / .300 / .195 but did drive in four.
Manager Joe Maddon said Gimenez "definitely could be in the big leagues right now" but "it's part of the business."
The moves bring the big-league camp roster down to 28, with the only non-roster players remaining being catcher Craig Albernaz and relievers Jamey Wright and Juan Carlos Oviedo, with Oviedo expected to be placed on the 60-day disabled list before the end of camp.
