The Tampa Bay Rays made the bus ride to Fort Myers, but their bats seemed to miss the trip.
Tampa Bay got good pitching from both Jeremy Hellickson and Jeff Niemann, but could only scratch across a single run of support in a 5-1 defeat at the hands of the Boston Red Sox Monday.
Boston got on the board in the third, as Jose Iglesias doubled off Hellickson with one out to short left, moved to third on a groundout by Brock Holt, and scored when Pedro Ciriaco's flare landed in left field for a 1-0 lead.
Tampa Bay evened the contest a half-inning later, as Jack Cust drew a walk from Terry Doyle to start the frame, and moved to second on an infield single by Chris Gimenez. A double play grounder by Wil Myers moved Cust to third, and Cole Figueroa's double brought him in to make it 1-1.
The game would not stay knotted long, as Jarrod Saltalamacchia would double on Jeff Niemann's first pitch, move to third on an infield single by Jonny Gomes, and come home on a double play grounder from Lyle Overbay.
Boston added three runs off Alex Colome in the seventh to set the score.
Tampa Bay will return to Fort Myers Tuesday to take on the Minnesota Twins at Hammond Stadium. First pitch is at 1:05.
