Earlier in the week B.J. Upton was identified as the top free agency target of the Atlanta Braves, according to reporting by Mark Bowman of MLB.com (via Twitter). That seems to be the case as he made his first official visit of the winter on Thursday after declining the Tampa Bay Rays' one-year, $13.3 million offer last week.
Upton, also being pursued by the Philadelphia Phillies, according to Bowman, visited with Braves general manager Frank Wren at Turner Field for much of Thursday afternoon and evening. The team is looking for a replacement for centerfielder Michael Bourn who is also a free agent this winter.
Bourn is a more of a one dimensional player in comparison to Upton who is younger and a bigger impact player at the plate.
Still, both are expected to haul in contracts in the range of five years and $75 million.
Upton doesn't come without some concerns, though. He's hit just .242/.317/.436 over the past three seasons in comparison to his 2007 stat line that will earn him this payday (.300/.386/.508). His numbers this past season, albeit with a career-best 26 home runs, is more par for the course than his inflated 2007 season.
That's the B.J. Upton that either the Phillies or Braves hope they will be getting for their $75 million.
