MLB Commissioner Bud Selig is in favor of the Tampa Bay Rays finding a new home thanks to a lack of attendance at Tropicana Field.

Despite a fifth-consecutive winning season, the Rays have been unable to find consistent support in St. Petersburg and the league is beginning to take notice.

Over those past five years, the Rays have made the playoffs three times and just fell short of another appearance

They averaged just 19,255 in attendance per game, which is good enough for dead last in the entire MLB.

“I’ll let you draw your own conclusion,” Selig said Thursday, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. “I think it’s a conclusion that’s pretty obvious.

This isn’t a change in stance by the head MLB official. In April, shortly after the start of the season, Selig made it clear he thought the Rays needed a new ballpark in order to draw bigger crowds and to compete as a result

"They need a new ballpark, there's no question," Selig said, according to AP Reporting (via ESPN). "I talked a lot to Stu Sternberg and he's talking to people. He and I have had many conversations, and we'll just monitor the situation. He's doing what he should do. He's there, he's talking to all parties trying to see what he can do.

Selig plans to speak again with Rays’ principal owner Stuart Sternberg soon for an update on the situation.

Topkin said St. Petersburg officials are planning a response to be released soon that will address the team’s request to amend its lease for the ability to begin formally searching for a new stadium location in either Pinellas or Hillsborough county.
