Rays Executive Vice President Andrew Friedman and manager Joe Maddon held their Season Wrap-up press conference Thursday, and it aired live on WDAE.
And Maddon clearly was not ready for the season to end.
"We're playing our best baseball," he said. "Truly we are one of the best teams out there... we just ran out of games."
Friedman was pressed by an eager media for the team's offseason plans though he was, as normally is the case, vague. However he did get directly to the point on the question of the team's ability to afford big-salaried free agents.
"Attendance and everything else" will "hinder" the team's being able to spend very much Friedman said. The Rays despite their on-field success were last in MLB in attendance.
He says it's too early to speculate on the team's payroll for next season.
Another big topic -- will the Rays unload one of their arms -- was brought up. Most Rays fans want the team to trade one of their starting pitchers, even if it's a big name like James Shields.
Friedman's not so quick to the trigger.
"If we ever have to go to market for pitching, we are doomed as an organization. That season we would have to write off," Friedman said.
