Tampa Bay Rays closer Fernando Rodney has been named the team's Most Valuable Player for 2012 season.
Rodney, on the brink of making Major League Baseball history for his amazing season, received the award at a team luncheon on Tuesday afternoon.
The award was voted on by the Tampa Bay Charter of the Baseball Writers' Association of America and presented to Rodney at the team function by the the chairman of the charter Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.
Those numbers speak for themselves.
"I know its probably a difficult choice to make, but Fernando right now is on the verge of having the best year of any relief pitcher in history, statistically speaking," Rays manager Joe Madden said, according to Bill Chastain and Greg Zeck of MLB.com.
Rodney's historic season includes a team-record 47 saves and an all-time MLB-best 0.61 ERA for relief pitchers with over 50 appearances.
Rodney wasn't the only Rays player recognized at the event. Left-handed starting pitcher Matt Moore earned the Oustanding Rookie Award while right-hander Chris Archer and outfielder were given recognition as the organization's best minor league pitcher and player, respectively.
