MORE TROUBLE: U.S. authorities in California said Thursday that former Edmonton Oilers owner Peter Pocklington will serve three extra months of federal probation in a 2010 perjury case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Antoine Raphael said the probation was to end Oct. 26 but was extended at a hearing in a Riverside federal court on Wednesday. Raphael said authorities are looking into whether Pocklington might have withheld personal financial information from probation officials. Prosecutors will use the extra months to determine if there was wrongdoing. Pocklington pleaded guilty to perjury in May 2010 after prosecutors alleged he concealed assets during bankruptcy proceedings.

WHAT WE MISSED: A 10-game slate was lost on Thursday, including the New York Rangers' home opener against the Dallas Stars, following an eight-game road trip necessitated by extensive renovations at Madison Square Garden. This was the second year of a three-year renovation at the famed arena that forces a shutdown throughout each summer.

ON THIS DAY LAST YEAR: Edmonton Oilers defenseman Andy Sutton received a five-game suspension from the NHL for elbowing Colorado Avalanche forward Gabriel Landeskog. He has been given a minor penalty for elbowing on the play.
