Florida's basketball team has suspended starting point guard Scottie Wilbekin indefinitely for undisclosed reason just one day before its season opener.
The Gators will face the Georgetown Hoyas on the flight deck of the USS Bataan in the innaugural Navy-Marine Corps Classic Friday night.
"Scottie is a great kid," Billy Donovan, UF's head coach said, according to Hays Carlyon of The Florida Times-Union. "He made some choices and did some things, I’m not going to have him a part of. How long it lasts, I don’t know. But right now, I felt like he didn’t need to be here on this trip and didn’t need to be playing in this game. It was my decision this morning to do that after finding out some information on some things."
Wilbekin may still play this season but it wont be until Donovan feels he's matured enough in his personal life before he sees the court.
Last season Wilbekin averaged 2.6 points and 1.6 assists per game playing behind starter Ervin Walker. Shooting guard Kenny Boynton will likely move over to the point position in his absence.
"He’s a terrific player," Georgetown coach John Thompson III said of Wilbekin. "He’s fast with the ball. He’s unselfish and he does a good job of getting other guys shots."
Florida will also be without forward Casey Prather due to concussion symptons following his second concussion in the past month.
