The Tampa Bay Buccaneers welcomed in a new face to the organization on Wednesday afternoon by signing free agent safety Dashon Goldson to a five year deal worth $8.25 million a season, including $22 million guaranteed. Goldson joined 620 WDAE Steve Duemig following an introductory press conference and said that the Buccaneers are on the up and up.
“I’m excited to just be a part here” said the two-time pro bowler. “I was able to be on some good football teams there in San Francisco, but my time there is done. I’m excited to get this thing going and definitely on a road to the Super Bowl.”
Goldson joins a Buccaneers secondary that ranked last in pass defense allowing 297 yards per game. However Goldson believes the Buccaneers are not a team that is starting from the bottom.
“They were 7-9 last year but they came pretty close in some games. Hopefully I can be an asset to help out to hopefully be that piece to get them over the edge” said Goldson.
Goldson selected as a fourth-round pick (126th overall) in the 2007 NFL Draft. Elevated to the team's starting free safety role in 2009, Goldson has earned consecutive Pro Bowl selections following the 2011 and 2012 seasons. He also received AP first-team All-Pro honors in 2012.
Goldson told 620 WDAE that he was glad the 49ers did not use the franchise tag on him, and looks forward to the challenge of going against the quarterback crop in the NFC South.
