Home Of The Rays

White Sox Beat Rays 9-6 on Walkoff Grand Slam

Just when it looked like an agonizingly long game would at least end in a Rays victory, Grant Balfour added to the agony.

After Evan Longoria's two-run homer gave the Rays a 6-4 lead in the top of the ninth, Chicago took advantage of a horrid Balfour performance, winning 9-6 on Jose Abreu's walkoff grand slam.

The contest took more than four hours to complete.

Balfour walked the bases loaded -- after the Rays had not surrendered a free pass all game. Not confident in his fastball, Balfour could not get the White Sox to chase his breaking pitches.

Alejandro De Aza hit a one-out double before Balfour walked Tyler Flowers, and Paul Konerko walked on four pitches to load the bases the first time. The Rays could have turned a game-ending double play but Ben Zobrist bobbled the ball slightly and the Rays got just one out.

Marcus Simien then walked, and after a first-pitch strike to Abreu, the White Sox slugger pounded a ball to the opposite field. It was Abreu's second homer of the night and ninth of the season.

Tampa Bay earned 11 walks itself, five by Matt Joyce, but only two of the runners scored. After coming up with three two-out hits to score four runs in the second, the Rays would go four straight innings of getting two runners on without scoring. Evan Longoria and Ryan Hanigan both hit into double plays.

Chris Archer could not hold the 4-1 lead. Abreu's solo shot made it 4-2 and Chicago got four quick hits to tie it in the fourth -- the Rays actually got out of it, with a grounder to Archer resulting in two runners getting caught in rundowns.

Jake McGee relieved Archer after a leadoff double in the seventh and got out of it impressively. Joel Peralta gave up one run in pitching the eighth.

Yunel Escobar, Hanigan and Ben Zobrist had the RBI hits followed by a Joyce bases-loaded walk to chase White Sox starter Erik Johnson the second.

Tampa Bay has lost three in a row.
