The Rays looked to bounce back from an extra innings lose yesterday, and the newest Rays pitcher Drew Smyly looked to help his team do so. In a game that saw a ton of runners left on base for both teams the Rays could not come up with the big hit which has plagued this team all year.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when Coco Crisp delivered an RBI single to score Alberto Callaspo and give the Athletics a 1-0 lead. Oakland would tack on two more runs in the sixth inning on RBI hits from Nate Freiman and Josh Reddick to extend the lead to 3-0.
Smyly would go 5.1 innings and all three Athletics runs would be charged to the new Rays starter. However, Smyly did strike out six hitters, and in the end of the day he gave his team a chance to win the game. In the end the Rays would fall to Jason Hammel and the A’s by a final of 3-0.
Tampa Bay will try to salvage the finale of this three game series tomorrow afternoon. First pitch scheduled for 3:35 PM. Coverage on 620 WDAE will begin at 2:30PM with the Suncoast Hyundai Dealer’s Inside Pitch.
