Smyly All Smiles In 3-1 Win Over Baltimore

Smyly All Smiles In 3-1 Win Over Baltimore

Who needs David Price?  On the same night Price gets shelled for 8 runs over 2 innings against the Yankees, one of the men he was traded for—Rays starter Drew Smyly— threw another gem.  Smyly was brilliant again as the Rays downed the Orioles 3-1 win on Wednesday night from Camden Yards.  The Rays improve to 65-68 while the Orioles drop to 75-56.  Orioles had just two hits on the night against Rays pitching.

Rays got on the board in the first inning against Orioles starter Kevin Gausman.  Ben Zobrist doubled off the wall in right and went to third on a wild pitch.  A fielder’s choice by Matt Joyce scored Zobrist to make it 1-0.  Evan Longoria was tagged out between 2nd and 3rd on a bad base running play on a single by James Loney.  Wil Myers did follow with an RBI single for a 2-0 Rays lead.  It could’ve been a bigger inning.  Zobrist added a sac fly in the 2nd to make it 3-0.  Longoria did have 3 hits on the night.

Smyly was terrific on this night.  He allowed a solo HR to Chris Davis in the 2nd inning—but was downright nasty after that.   Smyly threw 7 strong innings and allowed just one run on two hits with one walk and 6 strikeouts.  He improves to 3-1 as a member of the Rays.  Gausman (7-6) got the loss.  Brad Boxberger worked around a Longoria error to pitch a scoreless 8th.  Jake McGee finished it up in the 9th to record his 15th save.

On Thursday night, the Rays and Orioles close out their series at Camden Yards.  Jeremy Hellickson goes for the Rays against Bud Norris.  You can catch the Rays game on 1250am WHNZ and 98 Rock starting at 6:30pm.
