Rays Drop Extra-Inning Heartbreaker In Texas

Jeremy Hellickson tossed six shutout innings, but Texas broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the 14th with a bases loaded walk to Adam Rosales, giving the Rangers a 3-2 victory over the Rays Tuesday.

Both Hellickson and Texas starter Nick Tepesch kept hitters off the scoreboard through the first five innings.  Tampa Bay finally got to Tepesch in the sixth, as Desmond Jennings led off the frame with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ben Zobrist.  Matt Joyce then tripled in to the right field corner, and when Roughned Odor's throw to third went in to the camera well, Joyce was able to score.

Texas battled back in the seventh on reliever Joel Peralta, who gave up a leadoff single to Leonys Martin, then a double to Geovany Soto to put both runners into scoring position.  Odor then lifted a sacrifice fly to cut the Tampa Bay lead in half, then Shin-Soo Choo doubled in Soto to tie the game.  Elvis Andrus then singled to right, but Kevin Kiermaier gunned down Choo at the plate to keep the game tied.

The game remained tied until the bottom of the 14th, when Soto reached on a fielding error by Longoria.  Odor then singled pinch-runner Nick Martinez to second, and Choo's base hit loaded the bases.  Maddon employed the five-man infield to induce a popout by Elvis Andrus, but Rosales then drew four pitches outside the strike zone to end the game.

Tampa Bay will look to rebound Wednesday, when Chris Archer (7-6, 3.33 ERA) takes on Mikes Mikolas (1-4, 6.57 ERA).  First pitch is scheduled for 8:05, with pregame coverage on WDAE starting at 7:00 with the Suncoast Hyundai Dealers Inside Pitch.
