Miles Of Offense For Archer, Rays In Win Over Texas

Chris Archer struck out 12 in seven innings, and Rays hitters hit three home runs, powering Tampa Bay to a 10-1 win over the Texas Rangers Wednesday.

Matt Joyce got the Rays on the board in the first with an upper-deck solo home run off Rangers starter Miles Mikolas, his eighth of the year.

Tampa Bay added to their lead an inning later, as James Loney singled to start the frame in front of Sean Rodriguez, who blasted his 11th home run to extend the lead to 3-0.  Yunel Escobar flew out for the first out of the inning, but Curt Casali continued the offensive output with a double, and two batters later Brandon Guyer launched a two-run homer of his own, his second of the year for a 5-0 lead.

Texas got on the board in the fifth, when Leonys Martin broke up Archer's no-hit bid with a leadoff double.  Robinson Chirinos then singled Martin to third base, and Jim Aducci brought him in with a sacrifice fly.

RBI singles by Loney and Escobar in the top of the sixth extended the lead to 7-1, and Tampa Bay would get three more in the seventh on a base hit by Zobrist, a fielding error by Mikolas (1-5) on a Joyce ground ball, and a single by Loney.

Archer (8-6) struck out a career-high twelve in seven innings of work, allowing just four hits and the single run.  Brandon Gomes, called up for the game from Triple-A, worked the final two innings to give the rest of the relief corps a full day's rest.

Tampa Bay can finish off the series Thursday in the finale, as Jake Odorizzi (8-9, 3.89 ERA) will get the start against Robbie Ross Jr. (2-4, 5.61 ERA), who will start in place of Yu Darvish.  First pitch is scheduled for 8:05, with pregame coverage starting at 7:00 with the Suncoast Hyundai Dealers Inside Pitch.
