Jays Blank Rays 1-0 In 10 Innings

Jays Blank Rays 1-0 In 10 Innings

Thursday night’s loss for the Rays was the perfect way to sum up their season— pitching was there but the inability to get a clutch hit doomed them again.  Colby Rasmus smacked a home run in the 10th inning as the Blue Jays blanked the Rays 1-0 from Tropicana Field to complete the 3-game sweep.  The Rays drop to 67-74 while the Blue Jays improve to 72-67.

This was a classic pitchers’ duel between Jake Odorizzi and Mark Buehrle.  The pitchers traded zeroes inning after inning.  Ordorizzi went 7.1 innings and allowed just 3 hits with no walks and 3 strikeouts.  He has now pitched 14 1/3 innings of shutout baseball spanning over his last two starts.

Meanwhile, Buehrle was on his game too.  He tossed 8 shutout innings and allowed just 5 hits with one walk and 4 strikeouts.  Both starting pitchers received no-decisions on the night.

Rays had a major threat in the 9th against Brett Cecil.  Ben Zobrist singled and went to second on a wild pitch.  Wil Myers singled and Zobrist was stopped at 3rd.  After Brandon Guyer struck out, Evan Longoria was walked intentionally to load the bases with one out.  Logan Forsythe and Sean Rodriguez both struck out.  Rays had 1st and 3rd with nobody out and the bases loaded with one out—and they got nothing.  Story of the Rays season.

Steve Geltz served up the go-ahead HR to Colby Rasmus in the 10th inning.  Geltz took the loss.  Cecil got the win in relief.  Casey Janssen picked up the save.  Rays have now lost 12 of their last 17 at home and they're now 31-41 at home.

On Friday night, the Rays open a weekend series with the first place Orioles at Tropicana Field.  9-7 Alex Cobb goes for the Rays against 14-4 Wei-Yin Chen.  Our coverage begins at 6pm with Tom Krasniqi hosting the Suncoast Hyundai Dealers Inside Pitch on 620am WDAE and 95.3FM.
