ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (620 WDAE) - Rays fans have been wowed by the plays on the field by Yunel Escobar.  Now they'll have a chance to see them for a few more years.

The team and Escobar announced Saturday that they have agreed on a new two-year extension that will pay Escobar $13 million and includes a club option for 2017.

"He's certainly deserving," executive vice president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said Saturday.   "A lot of people would be surprised at his energy and what he provides on a daily basis is really a driver for a lot of our guys.  Our guys love the enthusiasm and energy he brings and he's a guy that just really fit in well from day one."

"I think it's one of the best things to ever happen to my my career," Escobar said through translator George Pappas.  "I came here last year to come in to a winning organization and the treament was right and we want to compete this year."

The shortstop had a club option for 2015 already, but Friedman said theat Escobar "commandeered" him in the clubhouse to express his desire to stay for a longer period of time.
