Alex Cobb threw six shutout innings, and Logan Morrison's sixth homer of the year helped the Tampa Bay Rays take their second game over the Miami Marlins 3-1 Tuesday at Marlins Park.
Cobb (2-2) scattered four hits while walking two and striking out a pair, throwing 92 pitches to even his record.
Logan Morrison got Tampa Bay on the board in the top of the third inning with his sixth home run of the year, a line drive that ended up deep in the seats in right.
The Rays added on in the top of the fifth, as Edinson Volquez, who left in the middle of the inning with a blister, walked a pair, then Dustin McGowan loaded the bases by walking Steven Souza Jr. Tim Beckham lifted a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0, and Derek Norris followed with a base hit that made the lead three runs.
After Chase Whitley worked a scoreless seventh, the marlins finally got on the scoreboard against Erasmo Ramirez, as Martin Prado singled to start the frame, and following a groundout by Christian Yelich, Giancarlo Stanton doubled in the Miami third baseman, though the Marlins would get no closer.
Alex Colome walked Derek Dietrch in the ninth, but struck out the other three hitters he faced to earn his seventh save of the season.
The win gives the Rays a 4-4 road trip, and gets them back to .500 on the season at 14-14.
The two teams will now shift the series to Tropicana Field for the next two games of the series. Blake Snell (0-2, 3.42 ERA) will start Wednesday's matchup, taking on Adam Conley (1-2, 6.86 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:10, with coverage on WDAE beginning at 6:00 with The Inside Pitch, presented by Sykes Lakeland.
NOTE: After the game, the Rays optioned pitcher Chih-Wei Hu to Triple-A Durham, with a corresponding move scheduled to be made Wednesday.
