Rays Bats Quiet As Yankees Take Middle Game

ST PETERSBURG (620 WDAE) -- Ronald Torreyes' and Chase Headley each hit home runs off Jake Odorizzi, as the Tampa Bay Rays dropped the middle gam of their three-game series to the new York Yankees 4-0 Tuesday at Tropicana Field.

Torreyes's blast came in the top of the third, following a base hit by Aaron Judge.  Brett Garner followed with a double, and after Gary Sanchez struck out, made it 3-0 when a Matt Holliday fly ball landed in left after hitting the B-ring.

Headley added to the lead in the sixth, with a solo shot ff the garage doors beyond center field for is first homer of the season, and made it 5-0 in the eighth off Austin Pruitt with a single against the shift, scoring Jacoby Ellsbury.

Rays hitters had fits Tuesday night against Yankees starter CC Sabathia, getting just three hits through the first five innings, and not faring any better against relievers Bryan Mitchell and Tyler Clippard, who each had perfect innings of relief.

The Rays had a golden opportunity in the eighth, loading the bases with just one out before Dellin Betances struck out Rickie Weeks Jr. and induced a broken-bat grounder from pinch-hitter Logan Morrison to kill off the rally.

Aroldis Chapman worked a perfect ninth for his first appearance of 2017.

Tampa Bay can still take the series with a win in Wednesday's finale.  Alex Cobb (1-2, 8.59 ERA in 2016) will get the start against Michael Pineda (6-12, 4.82 ERA in 2016).  First pitch is scheduled for 7:10, with coverage on WDAE beginning at 6:00 with The Inside Pitch.
