Another Tie Ends Grapefruit League Play For Rays

CLEARWATER (620 WDAE) -- The Tampa Bay Rays ended the 2017 Grapefruit League season the way they had four times earlier this spring: with no winner.

Tampa Bay squandered leads of 5-0 and 7-5 to finish the spring with yet another tie, this time a 7-7 decision with the Philadelphia Phillies.

AT THE PLATE: Steven Souza Jr. and Tim Beckham had big days for Tampa Bay.  Souza started the scoring in the top of the second with a monster blast to left field, which Howie kendrick didn't even turn around to see where it landed.

For Souza, it was his second home run of the spring.

Beckham extended the lead in the fourth after Clay Buchholz loaded the bases.  The shortstop unloaded them with a triple into the right-centerfield gap to make it a 4-0 game, scoring on a Mallex Smith sacrifice fly that made it 5-0.

For Beckham, he finishes the spring with a .327 batting average and 11 RBI.

Minor-leaguer's Michael Russell and Jake Fraley each drove in a run in the sixth after Philadelphia had come back to tie the game.

ON THE MOUND: Alex Cobb allowed just a single hit in his first three innings of work, but both he and reliever Austin Pruitt struggled in the fourth with two out, as the Phillies scored four times before Tampa Bay could get the final out of the inning.

Left-hander Blake Snell worked the fifth through eighth innings, and allowed a pair of runs on four hits which allowed Philadelphia to salvage the tie.

NUMBER OF THE GAME: 4.04 -- The earned run average of Tampa Bay's pitching staff this spring, allowing 126 earned runs in 280 2/3 innings of play.

UP NEXT: The Rays will work out at Tropicana Field Saturday before they start the 2017 regular season Sunday afternoon in St. Petersburg against the New York Yankees.  Chris Archer (9-19, 4.02 ERA in 2016) will get the start, taking on Masahiro Tanaka (14-4, 3.07 ERA in 2016).  First pitch is scheduled for 1:09, with coverage on WDAE beginning at 9:00 with Tom Krasniqi broadcasting live from the Trop.
