PORT CHARLOTTE (620 WDAE) -- Blake Snell allowed a pair of runs in two innings of work, and Patrick Leonard and Brad Miller each went deep, though the Tampa Bay Rays dropped a 10-8 decision to the Pittsburgh Pirates Thursday at Charlotte Sports Park.
THE GOOD: DH Logan Morrison, playing in his second game of the spring, led off the home first with a double and scored the first run of the game. He also walked and scored on an RBI groundout by Miller in the third. Leonard's two-run blast in the fourth gave Tampa Bay a 5-2 lead, while Miller's first homer of the spring would tie the game back up in the fifth.
THE BAD: Non-roster reliever Tommy Hunter could not get through the fifth inning, allowing four unearned runs in two-thirds of an inning thanks to a pair of errors. Rule 5 pickup Kevin Gadea, who bailed Hunter out to end the fifth, struggled in the sixth, allowing three more runs after Miller's blast tied the game, giving up three hits, walking two others and uncorking a wild pitch.
THE UGLY: After committing three errors in Wednesday night's loss to Colombia, the defense had two more miscues Thursday on Casey Gillaspie at first base and Johnny Field in right, both coming in the fifth inning.
UP NEXT: The Rays and Pirates continue their home-and-home set Friday afternoon in Bradenton, with Matt Andriese getting the start against Drew Hutchinson. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05.
