TAMPA, Fla. (970 WFLA/AP) – Many schools across the state are opening their doors this week including those in Pinellas, Pasco, Polk, and Manatee counties. Hillsborough schools open Tuesday.

Motorists across Florida are urged to use caution on the roads as students across Florida return to school.

Police agencies urge drivers to slow down in school zones and to be on the lookout for students who are crossing roads. Also, drivers are asked to watch out for school buses and to observe all traffic laws.

Depending on the district, schools are typically open from around 7 a.m. Through 4 p.m.

Authorities say traffic will be heavy, especially during the first week. So drivers are reminded to add a little extra time to their commutes.

As for school provided transportation, in Pasco County, Superintendant Kurt Browning says the district has made transportation improvements that are intended to make getting to and from school more efficient.

He says there is now a transportation call center available from 6:30am until 6:30 in the evening for any school transportation issue. There's also a "my bus loop" app for parents to get all bus stop info.

Hillsborough school bus drivers will be running their bus routes Monday in preparation for Tuesday morning.

And while transportation is a big focus this year in the Bay area, the new ‘common core’ standards are also being incorporated this year.
