Fla. legislators push for millions in spending

Posted Tuesday, April 15th 2014 @ 6pm

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Florida legislators with extra money to spend this year are steering taxpayer money to everything from gun ranges to a military museum to a course designed to teach “sexual risk avoidance.''

Public records obtained Tuesday from the Florida house show that legislators are pushing to get millions into the state's roughly $75 billion budget.

Hometown budget requests from state legislators used to be posted online. But legislative leaders discontinued this system during the state's economic downturn.

But records show that legislators are still asking for projects in emails, letters and sometimes just a message scrawled across a piece of paper.

Not every project is funded, although leading republican legislators appeared to have fared better than democrats.

Legislators have a budget surplus of roughly $1.2 billion this year.
