The prized acquisition of the offseason has yet to practice with the Buccaneers. But all signs point to cornerback Darrelle Revis being ready for the season opener at the N.Y. Jets on September 8. “That’s the goal”, says Revis after practice on Tuesday. “To be out there Week 1 and play”.
Revis rode the stationary bike on Tuesday and spent some time on the sidelines with his teammates. Revis told reporters he’s making progress from his ACL injury. “It’s going well. Just taking the steps everyday. Just improving….I mean, that’s basically it. Just try and improve everyday”.
“We’re improving. Me and Todd [Bucs trainer Todd Toricelli] are doing a great job. Out here running and cutting…even in the weight room. We’re getting stronger. There’s really no percentage on it right now but I can tell I feel better than I did a couple of weeks ago”, says Revis.
Revis says he has spoken to many football players and athletes who have suffered the same injury. “I heard a million ACL stories”, laughed Revis. “It’s a long process. It’s usually 6 months to a year and people recover faster and some people don’t. It takes time”.
Revis says he hasn’t spoken to Vikings RB Adrian Peterson, who made a remarkable recovery last season to rush for more than 2,000 yards. Peterson suffered his knee injury in late December of 2011 and was able to come back better than ever in 2012. Revis was injured last September at Miami so he has a three month start in the recovery process and that’s good news for the Bucs.
The Bucs appear confident that Revis can be ready for the season opener. “He’s doing a good job with his rehab and all those things and he’s doing a good job in the classroom”, says head coach Greg Schiano, who says Revis has a good grasp of the defense. It’s just a matter of getting Revis healthy. Revis believes he will be when the season rolls around. “I’m confident, I’m confident”, says Revis. “I’m cutting. Todd might tell me to slow down a little bit but I’m going full tilt because I feel good”. Good sign for the Bucs. As long as he’s ready for September 8th against his former team.
